VFLL WEEK #7 RECAP: WHAT DID WE LEARN?

We learned that when you play the Knights, you have to bring your "A" game and... you have to have a full roster! Case in point, the Phantom roster was depleted this weekend as a number of their players were away with their significant others at the Nanaimo craft fair Saturday afternoon and could not make it back in time for the game. Thirteen players took to the field for the men in purple but two didn't finish the game; those remaining did their best but the powerhouse Knights cruised to victory. Perry Underwood was like the energizer bunny this game for the Knight as he took a licking and kept on ticking, winning the POTG for the men in gold. Final score... a lot to a little.

Most of the academy players returned for the Chill in their match-up versus the Plugs. Action was back and forth with the first quarter tied at 3's. The Plugs then controlled the second quarter in most aspects taking an 8-4 lead into halftime. They continued on the run winning the third quarter (3-2) but the Chill lit a fire under their own asses and took the game to the Plugs in the fourth winning that quarter but it just wasn't enough to catch one of the league leaders. Final score was (12-9) Plugs.

This game showed how versatile the Goal Diggers roster is. With the 10th player arriving with a McDonald's Happy Meal in hand just minutes before game time, the 'Diggers had to move some players around from their usual spots... goalie Doug "Bones" White left the familiar confines of the crease to Brett "Cake Boss" Savory and took to long pole for the night. Midfielders got some breaks when the 'Digger poles advanced the ball, leading to an outstanding first half lead (9-3). Ball possession was key in this game and after dominating the draws in the first half, the GD's didn't maintain it and they began to tire, letting the 'Monsters claw their way back, taking the lead with a minute and a half left but then with a 'Monsters loss of possession late in the game, the bikini clad hero Dane Sorensen lets a howie fly from 30 yards beating his assistant coach in summer box in the bottom corner to secure a point and maintain a tie for 3rd place in the VFLL standings. Final score (12-12).
