Good "Knight" For the League Leaders

Knights 13 - Plugs 10

With all four (4) teams now donning their respective new uniforms (proudly supplied by X-treme Threads), the VFLL's teams are further excited about league play.

Last nights match-up between the Knights and the Plugs was another battle for top spot in the Victoria Field Lacrosse League. The Plugs scored the first goal of the contest on a beauty shot by Brodie "Get Outta My" Wade. It put the Knights in hungry mode as they then scored the next four goals of the quarter, led by Captain Cole Christiaens (3) and Adam "Gator" Golia (1). The Knights went into first intermission with a 4-1 lead. The Knights started the 2nd quarter scoring with a dinger off the post by Adam Golia again but that's when the Plugs "charged" their way back with a balanced scoring attack with goals by Spence, Higgs, Wade and Lewis. A highlight goal for the Knights in the frame was when midfielder Kotaro Saito sprinted off the wing line at a faceoff, slashed through the maze of players to snag the loose ball and broke free down the lane, scoring on a 20 yard shot that squeezed by the Plugs Moses Vukmirovich. Halftime score was 7-5.

Both teams battled hard in the third quarter, each scoring three goals and keeping the game a two goal contest. Knights Golia had two more with the other coming from the hot stick of Parker Johnson. The Plugs matched the output with two goals from Spence and a single from Lewis. The Knights opened the fourth quarter scoring 3 minutes in but two possessions later, the Plugs tallied reducing the lead back to two. Each teams' defence would take over, with goalies leading the way but unfortunately for the Plugs, they would turn over possession late in the game and the Knights would put the dagger in them, scoring with :48 seconds left to take a three goal lead and win the contest and bragging rights as current league leaders.

goal diggers 14 - phantom 1

The Phantom and the Goal Diggers played the last game of the evening last night. While both teams braved the on-again, off-again water falling from the sky, the temperature  stayed mild and all weathered the rain.

The 'Diggers opened the scoring 2 1/2 minutes in when Guy "Sweetness" Cullen slipped past his defender coming around a stack and burying it low on the Phantoms' T.J. Prokop. The Goal Diggers would then take advantage of loose ball opportunities or errant passes and pot four more (Merilainen (2), Fedrigo, and Rees Cullen) and have a 5-0 lead after the first. The Phantom had a number of chances in the 2nd quarter but just couldn't solve the quick stick of the GD's Doug White. The 'Diggers would again get a good opportunity every few possessions on miscues and bury four more to end the half. The Phantoms' T.J. Prokop had 16 saves by the half.

The Phantom had an excellent third quarter, turning aside opportunity after opportunity that the Goal Diggers made for themselves. Scoring only once in the frame (G. Cullen), the Phantom capitalized on an intercepted pass and #44 Isaac Swan broke through the GD's defence down the gut to bury a low shot past the 'keeper. Both teams played a fantastic fourth quarter but the constant shots took their toll on the Phantom, allowing a few more before the end of the game.
